In this video, I will talk about the four things business owners need to give up to be better bosses for their teams.
Giving up these behaviors will help your local business grow and achieve small business success.
Hi, I’m Doug Barra, and I have the honor and privilege to work with entrepreneurs and owners of local businesses to transform their organizations and achieve their business goals.
A common question I get asked is: “What do I need to do to be a better boss?”
And while there are many answers to that question, today, I want to focus on four key things that business owners need to give up to be better bosses for their teams.
The first thing you need to give up is being “Super Boss.”
Being “Super Boss” is when you fly in at a moment’s notice to save the day! This is where you are trying to do everything yourself. You think that you need to have your hand in every aspect of the business for it to succeed. But the truth is, this leads to burnout and frustration. It also trains your team that they don’t have to “do” anything. Just call for help, and “Super Boss” will save the day.
Instead, focus on being a coach and leader for your team. Empower them to take ownership of their work and make decisions. Provide guidance and support when needed, but let them take the lead.
The second thing you need to give up is micro-managing.
This is when you constantly look over your team’s shoulder and tell them what to do. You might think that this is how you get things done, but it actually leads to a feeling of being stifled and not trusted. It also creates an environment where people are afraid to make mistakes. Instead, focus on setting clear expectations and letting your team members take the lead. Trust that they will do the job right and provide feedback along the way. Then, if there are problems, work together to find solutions.
The third thing you need to give up is abdicating.
This is when you delegate tasks but don’t follow up to ensure completion and quality. This can lead to a feeling of being unimportant and not valued. It also creates an environment where people are not accountable for their actions. Instead, focus on delegating tasks with clear expectations and timelines. Then, follow up regularly to check in on progress and provide feedback. Finally, help your team members troubleshoot any problems they may be having.
And finally, the fourth thing you need to give up is savioritis.
This is when you always try to be the savior for your team or customers. You think it’s your job to save them from their circumstances or themselves. But this creates a feeling of dependence and not being valued. Instead, focus on being a resource for your team or customers, providing information and support when needed, but let them take the lead in finding solutions. Then, empower them to succeed on their own.
So there you have it! Business owners need to give up four things to be better: Being “Super Boss,” micro-managing, abdicating, and savioritis.
Giving up these behaviors will help your local business grow and achieve small business success. So if you’re ready to discover what it takes to be a great boss, put these tips into practice today!

I’ve been in business for over 10 years and have a growing company. But over the last year I have taken my company to a new level because of Doug Barra and his staff. ActionCOACH has helped me to focus on certain areas in my business that were not generating as much business as it should have. I strongly recommend anyone that wants to break through to call Doug and have a one on one session with him.

My coach is my weekly boost! She inspires and motivates me. I have renewed confidence and drive every time we speak. My business and personal life has been completely transformed as a result of having a business coach. As an interior designer, I had lots of creativity but very little business structure. In my first year of coaching I have set up systems, understand my financials for the first time, increased my staff, work with budgets and increased my profits in 2007 by 250%! When I started coaching, I was in personal debt and now I am debt free! My coach has empowered me in every area of life, I am very grateful. Thank you
